Marsha Hargette has been Executive Director since 2018. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from North Carolina State University and has furthered her professional development through nonprofit leadership programs, including certification through the University of Richmond. Deeply committed to the mission, she considers it a privilege to serve an organization that has been impacting families in the Raleigh community for decades.
What drew you to what you do? When I was a junior in college, I had several friends pass away in a very short period, and it altered who I was. I felt a strong pull to help others, so I joined AmeriCorps and served in Seattle. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done and I loved every second of it. I have never done anything other than nonprofit work. Over the years, I have had the fortune of working with some incredible nonprofits, but Frankie Lemmon School has my heart. I have a daughter with special needs, so I know how critical access to education and therapies is because I live it.
What part of your job doesn’t feel like work? It’s going to sound cheesy, but work. We have the best students, families, team and supporters that make me love what I do every single day, (errr, except budget prep days). I truly feel incredibly lucky to be a part of Frankie Lemmon School.
What are you watching? My son and I love movies. Right now, we are watching movies produced by A24. Dave and I love documentaries, all college sports, Canes and Liverpool FC.
What’s a hill you’ll absolutely die on? Ice cream is the superior food. Fruit doesn’t belong on pizza, in beer or in other dishes (stay out of my chicken salad). There are exceptions to this; see the superior food.
